Are you afraid of Halloween?

No, I don't mean afraid of the ghosts and goblins and haunted houses...

I mean afraid of all that candy and what it has done to your waistline in the past.

Nervous you might have a breakdown and binge on it this year? Here are some tips so that Saturday (or Monday?) morning you don't wake up full of regret, too-tight jeans, and face palms.

As I sit here listening to Christmas music--yes, I am being that crazy person right now, blame it on the Pottery Barn holiday catalog that just appeared in the mailbox--I'm thinking about how hard I've been working with my P90X3 workouts this week and how a weekend of chocolate binging would make me extremely frustrated with my progress. I like progress...it's pretty motivating. I'd rather see a positive change in the mirror rather than slide down that slippery, chocolatey slope. Continuous confidence, strength, and pride versus 5 minutes of indulgence followed by days of guilt, bloat, frustration, and backtracking? Ehhhh I think you know my vote.

BUT I know it's hard. But just because it's hard doesn't mean you shouldn't even try! Prepare yourself mentally, go in with a game plan, and use these tips to help you stay on track throughout this weekend:

1. Wait till the last minute to get the candy you'll pass out.
Yes, I realize there will be slim pickins, but do you need to have the BEST things to hand out?? You know those kids won't care what you put in their buckets...they'll have plenty of the "good stuff." By getting it at the last minute, you won't be walking by it every day, having it staring at you and taunting you. Leave the temptation out of your house as long as you can!

2. DON'T get YOUR favorite!!
What's your least favorite candy? Me, I'm a chocolate girl and don't really care for Jolly Ranchers and the sort so you can put money on the fact that there will be NO chocolate handed out on this porch. Seriously, why put yourself through that punishment? A huge bowl full of the candy you would love to swim in, sleep on, and have an endless supply of just staring at you all night long? That's just asking for it....stay awaaaaaaay Butterfinger!

3. Get your sweat on.
When you skip a workout, you're more likely to let yourself get off track with your eating. It's all connected--stay disciplined in all areas and you'll stay focused on your goals! Stay as much in your routine as possible. Just because it's a holiday doesn't mean you need to skip a workout- really think about it...does that even make sense? I'm going to get mine out of the way early so I can't talk myself out of it later ;)

4. Be disciplined in the rest of your food intake during the day.
If you are planning to have a couple pieces (a COUPLE. that's 2. not 10. just in case there is any confusion.) then shift your food intake throughout the rest of the day. Since you'll be getting some sugar in via that candy, stick to lower sugar options elsewhere. Your dressing on that healthy salad? Might be loaded with sugar. Your cereal, muffin, pasty, coffee, (Naked) juice, mango salsa on that healthy chicken? All loaded with sugar. Check the ingredient label. If you're at a restaurant, google it before you order. Or just ask for a nutrition guide!! Who cares if you get a silly look?? YOU GOT GOALS DUDE!!! (Excuse the turrible grammar there.) I HIGHLY suggest utilizing the MyFitnessPal app to track EVERYTHING that enters your mouth. It will probably open your eyes BIG time with the nutrients (or lack thereof) in the foods you're eating and just how quickly calories (and sugar...seriously it's EVERYWHERE) add up!

5. Be laser focused on your goals.
Have that VISION of what your ultimate goal is. Clear, defined vision. When you've met that ultimate goal in your health journey, what do you look like? How do you walk? How do you talk? How do you feel about sweet treats? What does THAT version of you act like? ACT like that NOW. How will you ever become that person if you don't make the changes necessary to become it? Do you think you'll just wake up one day and a switch will be flipped and you just all of the sudden have a 6 pack, positive mindset, are eager to workout, and want to eat fresh fruits and veggies all day long? ................. -_- ................ You gotta make those changes in your routine NOW so that they add up and compound over time. How would THAT version of you feel/act/look/eat on Halloween?
